The car’s mechanical problems including having to install a new engine during Saturday’s time trials forced Hamilton to start in 9th place, way in the back. Twenty-two cars competed.
Despite five pit stops during the race, Hamilton battled back to finish 7th overall. He has not won a race this year.
Nico Rosberg, Hamilton’s Mercedes AMG teammate, won the Chinese Grand Prix. He is the overall points’ leader. Hamilton is now second.
Hamilton’s troubles started in Turn 2 when Felipe Nasr, who drives for Sauber, broke off part of the front wing of Hamilton’s car while trying to avoid a collision between two Ferraris.
The accident forced Hamilton to take a pit stop. The car dragged because part of the loose wing damaged the car’s floor. Driving the car was like driving a four-poster bed, Hamilton said.
