Amazon won’t build its second headquarters in New York’s concrete jungle.
Amazon recently announced that it won’t build a second headquarters in Long Island City in the borough of Queens, New York, because of opposition from elected officials.
Company officials will reopen the search process, but it will proceed with plans to build facilities in Nashville and in North Virginia.
Amazon announced that it would create 25,000 jobs and build one of two new headquarters in Long Island City and the borough of Queens, across the East River from Manhattan, but local politicians opposed the $2.8 billion in incentives promised to Amazon, the world’s third wealthiest company.
Residents, however, feared Amazon would gentrify the neighborhoods, forcing them out their homes.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo offered the incentives to Amazon to persuade the company to build its second headquarters in New York.
Amazon said it needs collaborative relationships with state and local officials.
Amazon is based in Seattle.
