SAO PAULO, BRAZIL — Joseph Jackson, father of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson and the patriarch of the Jackson family, has been admitted to Albert Einstein Israelite’s intensive care unit after suffering a stroke here.
Jackson, who is 87, suffered a stroke on July 27, a day after his 87th birthday. He was born July 26, 1928. He was in Sao Paulo to celebrate his birthday.
His birthday party, a $200,000 event at a golf club, went on without him, according to G1, a website of Globo Networks, Brazil’s largest television network.
Hospital officials issued a four-sentence bulletin saying he had been diagnosed with ischemic stroke associated with cardiac arrhythmia. He was admitted to the hospital’s Morumbi Branch.
Hospital officials said they will provide new information about Jackson as it become available.
Jackson, a Gary, Indiana, steelworker, believed in his sons enough to fashion them into one of the world’s greatest singing groups. The jewel in the crown, however, was Michael Jackson, who died on June 25, 2009.
Joseph Jackson’s Facebook page is replete with photos of him attending various events in Sao Paulo.
People also wrote get well messages and happy birthday greetings.
Jackson’s representatives said in statement posted on his website: “To my family, friends, acquaintances and fans all over the world: I want to thank you all for your prayers, unwavering support and kind well wishes during these trying times. Through God’s intervention the wonderful doctors, nurses and caretakers at Albert Einstein Sao Paulo Hospital have taken great care of me. God willing, I should be able to make a quick recovery and travel back home soon. Thank you all once again for your prayers and support.”
